Hyvästi Samos, jälleennäkemistä odottaen / Goodbye Samos (until next time)!

The dog transport from Samos, Erik and Big Boss coming back from the walk

Two lucky ones from the transport, both will get an own family in Germany!

Left: Tom and doggy called Trash. Trash is such (!) a lovely dog, Tom found him in a rubbish dump - therefore he got name Trash - Right Erik, Tom and my boss..

Olympia and on the left the Temple of Hera. According to the legend, here was kept the disk of the Sacred Truce. Front of it is Hera´s alter, where the olympic light starts.

Mountain village Lagkadia in Peloponnesos

"Olga and Popeye" haha! Cats and dogs certainly don´t have always a good life in Greece, but I have to admit that cows are having a lot better life in Greece than other European countries! Cows on the beach! We also so few times pigs walking free next to the roads, that´s a good life!

Arriving to Cephalonia, Poros

Breathtaking beautiful beach in Lefkada, Porto Kastraki

Big boss and the doggy at Porto Kastraki

This is how our trip to Lefkada ended, heavy rain, so it was time to move on in Spain :)

Tästä me jatkoimme omaa matkaamme ja päädyimme ajamaan Peloponnesoksen läpi, pieniä maisemareittejä valikoiden vuorten läpi. Ylväät ja hienot maisemat, palanen kaunista Kreikkaa! Lämpötila laski huomattavasti vuorilla, tipahdimme keskelle syksyä, jonka jälkeen saavuimme yllättäen lämpimään Lagkadian vuoristokylään, jossa nautimme kahvit terassilla yli 1000 metrin korkeudessa auringon mukavasti lämmittäessä kasvojamme. Täältä otimme suunnaksi Olympian, kaupungin josta muinaiset olympialaiset alkoivat.

Totesimme olleemme kolme kuukautta Kreikassa, kolme mahtavaa kuukautta! Italian läpi ajoimme vauhdilla, viivyimme siellä vain kolme yötä, Ranskassakin olimme vain yhden yön Andorran kupeessa. Tänään saavuimme Espanjaan ja ensimmäinen camping löytyi Bracelonasta etelään! Espanjasta kerronkin sitten seuraavassa päivityksessä!

We left Samos behind us and took the same ferry with Tom and Erik who were going back to Holland and having 21 dogs with them. Dogs will get new homes in Germany, expect one which Tom was going to take for themselves (haha, a birthday present for Ingrid). Tom and Ingrid has already two Samos pointer- dogs at home and now they are having one more pointer which makes it now “Pointer Sisters” as they are all girls too, hah!

So back to the dog transport..I can assure you that it is not easy to have 20 dogs more or less at your van and a trailer in this journey with two ferry trips and quite a few kilometers to drive. Tom has done this trip over 10 times, usually with his wife Ingrid, but this time he got Erik as a helper. All dogs need naturally walking, feeding and drinking during the trip and this is quite much work. You have to have a good place were to walk so many dogs and you have to walk them one by one since most of the dogs has never walked on a leash, so it’s impossible to have two dog at the time. So you can imagine that this takes quite a while per walk.

Ferry from Samos left at 6 am and we arrived in Athens (Piraeus) at 4 pm and we were driving behind Tom, Erik and 21 dogs with our camper. Since Tom has done this journey many times, he knows the good places to stop and sleep. First place was a small fishing village and there was a good beach to get the dogs out, walk and feed them and for us a peaceful place to sleep. After the work we were eating warm soup, made a bed for Tom and Erik in the camper and very soon after that everyone was ready to sleep. Clock ringed early next morning and we started to walk all dogs again. This time it was easier, since there was already daylight. Dogs seemed to be happy to see and hear us, everything was going well with them (and remember, all this is done that the dogs will soon find a very own homes!). It´s nicer for the dogs that they know us from the shelter and they come happy when hearing our voices. Usually when Tom drives back to Holland with the dogs, he has been working mostly few months at the shelter so he is very familiar with the dogs who gets transported that time. He told that it is easier in that way, since he has noticed that when he has done “only” a dog pick-up without spending time at the shelter it’s more difficult. He don’t know the dogs and their characters.

Tom and Erik left towards Igoumenitsa and they took a ferry from there to Italy and started their trip trough Austria to Germany and Holland. We got later a message from them that all dogs has arrived well in Germany and Tom and Ingrid´s new pointer is now called “Jona”. We started to drive forwards too and we chose the route through Peloponnesos, which was a great choice. Beautiful sceneries in these small mountain roads and it felt that we would have suddenly dropped middle of an autumn. Trees with dropping yellow leaves and temperature was much cooler as well. Still we found a nice mountain village called Lagkadia where we could sit outside at the terrace and drink coffee while sun was warming our faces in 1100 meters high!

We stayed one day at Olympia, the home for ancient Olympics and we had a look around there. Still today the Olympic game fire starts there. After Olympia it was a time to visit an island again and we decided to go to Cephalonia which turned out very picturesque island! Yes, this is the island where the film Captain Corelli´s mandolin was filmed in main roles Nicolas Cage (oih (!), whistles loud!) and Penelope Cruz (ok, fine, she is pretty too). Houses there were full of colors and they seemed to be also many sizes bigger than all the other islands we have seen. Very rare color contrast but they looked so happy with all the bright colors! Tourist season was of course over there too, so many nice small villages we saw were totally deserted. This had nice parts too; we could sleep everywhere with our own peace. Three nights we slept in Poros, which is more real village in winter as well. Some amount of shops and taverns were open and we met nice people there. Special regards to shop “Athene” in Poros! Cephalonia is definitely an island worth visiting and we guess we will visit it again one day!

After spending one week in Cephalonia we hit the road again, back to mainland and then again to an island, Lefkas. First impression was a bit shocking, entrance gave us a picture that Lefkada was a busy place, since there were cars parked all over and in two minutes time we saw four campers! Four campers after not seeing any in over two months! But a closer look showed that it was not big at all! We drove the east coast to the south, crossed the island and found a perfect spot: Porto Kastraki and all this we did in few hours. Porto Kastraki was absolutely beautiful empty beach, without any people or houses nearby. We spent there two nights and the other day was 24 c, warm sun and big boss went for a swim! We both took probably near 200 pictures from this magical place. So breathtaking! Pictures with different time of the day, so the light and sea colors never looked same! When we left it started to rain so the west coast of the island we were driving under a heavy rain. We also “saved” probably a 100 -year old Greek woman from the road who was walking there without any protection or umbrella and we took here in the camper and brought her home. This made all of us happy! There is not much we can tell about the west coast since we did not see anything and we left the island after that.

Where next? Corfu? Italy? We chose Italy and crossed the sea. We had three great months at Greece and left many old and new friends behind…until next time…

We arrived in Ancona 11 December and took a camping in Toscana where we could was our laundry and get electricity, since our camper was last time loaded in Samos, over two weeks before. “Wild camping” is far nicer than the actual campings, but it´s so nice to get all comforts too! We stayed in Italy three nights, arrived in France and slept also there only one night near Andorra. Today we arrived in Spain and took a camping south from Barcelona, so the next update will probably tell something about Spain! Adios amigos!
