Hyvästi Samos, jälleennäkemistä odottaen / Goodbye Samos (until next time)!

The dog transport from Samos, Erik and Big Boss coming back from the walk

Two lucky ones from the transport, both will get an own family in Germany!

Left: Tom and doggy called Trash. Trash is such (!) a lovely dog, Tom found him in a rubbish dump - therefore he got name Trash - Right Erik, Tom and my boss..

Olympia and on the left the Temple of Hera. According to the legend, here was kept the disk of the Sacred Truce. Front of it is Hera´s alter, where the olympic light starts.

Mountain village Lagkadia in Peloponnesos

"Olga and Popeye" haha! Cats and dogs certainly don´t have always a good life in Greece, but I have to admit that cows are having a lot better life in Greece than other European countries! Cows on the beach! We also so few times pigs walking free next to the roads, that´s a good life!

Arriving to Cephalonia, Poros

Breathtaking beautiful beach in Lefkada, Porto Kastraki

Big boss and the doggy at Porto Kastraki

This is how our trip to Lefkada ended, heavy rain, so it was time to move on in Spain :)

Tästä me jatkoimme omaa matkaamme ja päädyimme ajamaan Peloponnesoksen läpi, pieniä maisemareittejä valikoiden vuorten läpi. Ylväät ja hienot maisemat, palanen kaunista Kreikkaa! Lämpötila laski huomattavasti vuorilla, tipahdimme keskelle syksyä, jonka jälkeen saavuimme yllättäen lämpimään Lagkadian vuoristokylään, jossa nautimme kahvit terassilla yli 1000 metrin korkeudessa auringon mukavasti lämmittäessä kasvojamme. Täältä otimme suunnaksi Olympian, kaupungin josta muinaiset olympialaiset alkoivat.

Totesimme olleemme kolme kuukautta Kreikassa, kolme mahtavaa kuukautta! Italian läpi ajoimme vauhdilla, viivyimme siellä vain kolme yötä, Ranskassakin olimme vain yhden yön Andorran kupeessa. Tänään saavuimme Espanjaan ja ensimmäinen camping löytyi Bracelonasta etelään! Espanjasta kerronkin sitten seuraavassa päivityksessä!

We left Samos behind us and took the same ferry with Tom and Erik who were going back to Holland and having 21 dogs with them. Dogs will get new homes in Germany, expect one which Tom was going to take for themselves (haha, a birthday present for Ingrid). Tom and Ingrid has already two Samos pointer- dogs at home and now they are having one more pointer which makes it now “Pointer Sisters” as they are all girls too, hah!

So back to the dog transport..I can assure you that it is not easy to have 20 dogs more or less at your van and a trailer in this journey with two ferry trips and quite a few kilometers to drive. Tom has done this trip over 10 times, usually with his wife Ingrid, but this time he got Erik as a helper. All dogs need naturally walking, feeding and drinking during the trip and this is quite much work. You have to have a good place were to walk so many dogs and you have to walk them one by one since most of the dogs has never walked on a leash, so it’s impossible to have two dog at the time. So you can imagine that this takes quite a while per walk.

Ferry from Samos left at 6 am and we arrived in Athens (Piraeus) at 4 pm and we were driving behind Tom, Erik and 21 dogs with our camper. Since Tom has done this journey many times, he knows the good places to stop and sleep. First place was a small fishing village and there was a good beach to get the dogs out, walk and feed them and for us a peaceful place to sleep. After the work we were eating warm soup, made a bed for Tom and Erik in the camper and very soon after that everyone was ready to sleep. Clock ringed early next morning and we started to walk all dogs again. This time it was easier, since there was already daylight. Dogs seemed to be happy to see and hear us, everything was going well with them (and remember, all this is done that the dogs will soon find a very own homes!). It´s nicer for the dogs that they know us from the shelter and they come happy when hearing our voices. Usually when Tom drives back to Holland with the dogs, he has been working mostly few months at the shelter so he is very familiar with the dogs who gets transported that time. He told that it is easier in that way, since he has noticed that when he has done “only” a dog pick-up without spending time at the shelter it’s more difficult. He don’t know the dogs and their characters.

Tom and Erik left towards Igoumenitsa and they took a ferry from there to Italy and started their trip trough Austria to Germany and Holland. We got later a message from them that all dogs has arrived well in Germany and Tom and Ingrid´s new pointer is now called “Jona”. We started to drive forwards too and we chose the route through Peloponnesos, which was a great choice. Beautiful sceneries in these small mountain roads and it felt that we would have suddenly dropped middle of an autumn. Trees with dropping yellow leaves and temperature was much cooler as well. Still we found a nice mountain village called Lagkadia where we could sit outside at the terrace and drink coffee while sun was warming our faces in 1100 meters high!

We stayed one day at Olympia, the home for ancient Olympics and we had a look around there. Still today the Olympic game fire starts there. After Olympia it was a time to visit an island again and we decided to go to Cephalonia which turned out very picturesque island! Yes, this is the island where the film Captain Corelli´s mandolin was filmed in main roles Nicolas Cage (oih (!), whistles loud!) and Penelope Cruz (ok, fine, she is pretty too). Houses there were full of colors and they seemed to be also many sizes bigger than all the other islands we have seen. Very rare color contrast but they looked so happy with all the bright colors! Tourist season was of course over there too, so many nice small villages we saw were totally deserted. This had nice parts too; we could sleep everywhere with our own peace. Three nights we slept in Poros, which is more real village in winter as well. Some amount of shops and taverns were open and we met nice people there. Special regards to shop “Athene” in Poros! Cephalonia is definitely an island worth visiting and we guess we will visit it again one day!

After spending one week in Cephalonia we hit the road again, back to mainland and then again to an island, Lefkas. First impression was a bit shocking, entrance gave us a picture that Lefkada was a busy place, since there were cars parked all over and in two minutes time we saw four campers! Four campers after not seeing any in over two months! But a closer look showed that it was not big at all! We drove the east coast to the south, crossed the island and found a perfect spot: Porto Kastraki and all this we did in few hours. Porto Kastraki was absolutely beautiful empty beach, without any people or houses nearby. We spent there two nights and the other day was 24 c, warm sun and big boss went for a swim! We both took probably near 200 pictures from this magical place. So breathtaking! Pictures with different time of the day, so the light and sea colors never looked same! When we left it started to rain so the west coast of the island we were driving under a heavy rain. We also “saved” probably a 100 -year old Greek woman from the road who was walking there without any protection or umbrella and we took here in the camper and brought her home. This made all of us happy! There is not much we can tell about the west coast since we did not see anything and we left the island after that.

Where next? Corfu? Italy? We chose Italy and crossed the sea. We had three great months at Greece and left many old and new friends behind…until next time…

We arrived in Ancona 11 December and took a camping in Toscana where we could was our laundry and get electricity, since our camper was last time loaded in Samos, over two weeks before. “Wild camping” is far nicer than the actual campings, but it´s so nice to get all comforts too! We stayed in Italy three nights, arrived in France and slept also there only one night near Andorra. Today we arrived in Spain and took a camping south from Barcelona, so the next update will probably tell something about Spain! Adios amigos!

Melkein arkea? Used to Samos?

These photos were take in Posidonia, a small fishing village located less than 2 kilometers from Turkey Vene ja katti- kuva Posidonion kalastuskylästä, alle 2 kilometrin päästä Turkista.

Beatiful Lucia from Posidonia (more in a text).
Kaunis Lucia Posidonion kylästä (lisää tekstissä).

Happy Maria in Pirgos (notice her original closet for the dishes, old fridge!)

Iloinen Maria Pirgoksen kylästä (huomaa hänen erikoinen astiakaappi takana, käytöstä poistettu jääkaappi!)

City of Samos and one windy day in Pythagorion.
Samoksen kaupunki ja tuulinen päivä Pythagorionissa.

New small chappel builded in an old church in Pirgos.
Uusi kappeli rakennettu vanhan kirkon raunioiden sisälle Pirgoksen vuoristokylässä.

Boss got a lesson from Tolis how to melt silver and on the right Kuksa getting water from the river in Potami.

Pomolla oli mukava iltapäivä Toliksen opissa, kuinka käsitellä eri metalleja ja oikealla Kuksalle vettä Potamin joesta.

Cat found a bed in an old Beetle. Boss was suddenly standing between sheeps and sheep dogs in Pythagorion.

Kissa löysi mukavan nukkumapaikan kuplavolkkarin hattuhyllyltä. Pomo huomasi melkein
vahingossa seisovansa keskellä lammaslaumaa, sekä koiria.

Empty streets in Kokkari after season and oh no (!) someone else seems to like skulls too!

Boss and the big boss were cooking at the house, nice evening with Joeri, Tom, Daisy, Sanna and Peppe and of course the dogs (see Houdini at the end of the table asking for food).

Empty beaches and a lazy day in November at Potokaki Beach. Autiot rannat, laiska päivä Potokakin rannalla marraskuussa.

Voih!

He puhuivat erinomaista englantia, sillä he ovat 70-luvulla asuneet usean vuoden Amerikassa.

We could almost get used to this life in Samos, but it’s time to move on soon! My family tries hard to live next week, but where, that’s still a bit open, most probably in Spain. Weather has been fabulous, blue sky with a warming sun, daily temperature still around 20 c.

We have been lucky again with meeting some very nice local people. We have got invitation in three homes during last week. Beautiful Lucia, a 83 year old lady, who could also speak French, since she has lived in Congo in the past for over 30 years. We visited her few times and learned to know also some of her friends, such a fun! Happy Maria is an 84 year old woman who we met in mountain village called Pirgos. Maria is still picking every day olives and she is in a top shape! In this same village we met Yan(nis) and his wife Maria (every other women in Greece seems to be called Maria) and they were offering their amazing hospitality. We had a nice afternoon in their living room and we talked about many different things. They told us that the movie “My Greek fat wedding” is so reality, that’s how the Greeks are, so if you haven’t seen this movie, go for it, rent it from the video rental or buy it!

I also have bad news from this beautiful village, Pirgos. They have started (like all the villages in Greece too) poisoning cats and dogs which they often do with rat poison. Big boss found one of those cats on a side alley and he took it with to get it out of its misery at the volunteers house (they put this cat in sleep). Sometimes it can take three days before a cat or a dog is dying for this poison and you can imagine that in this way their death is very slow and painful! Another cat was found by our dog, this cat had probably got a hit by a car, so he got his final sleep too. These kind of things are here daily after the tourist season is over! Not all Greeks accept these poisonings, but still it happens in every village…

Edelleen Samoksella / Still in Samos

Ferry trip from Athens (Piraeus) to Samos. No cabin, so we slept one night outside in the deck, because of our dog, very fresh indeed! Picture on the right is taken in a pictoresque mountain village Vourliotes, so Greek!

Laivamatka taittui kannella ilman hyttiä, erittäin raikasta kyytiä! Oikeanpuoleinen kuva otettu Vourlioteksen kylästä, niin kreikkalaista!

Big boss doing some painting job at the house from the volunteers who works at the dog shelter.

And more painting, see the little helper on big boss lap. Big boss, Joeri and Peppe putting this new and painted window on its place. This room looks today so different!

Tom was helping to install the window from outside as you can see that he is the strongest man at the window- team! Whos says that our doggy doesnt get along with cats??? Watching the road while we did painting with her new friends; Tio Pepe, this charming little dog behind her and in front this orange cat, all laying in peace together!

Kissala on talon takapiha, jossa asustelee 15-30 kissaa. Kissat eivät ole tarhalla, vaan heidän paikka on talon pihalla, jossa heille on aina ruokaa ja petejä tarjolla.

Boss was happy to get some layndry done. On the right is the yard for the cats, since they are not staying at the shelter, they have their place in the backyard of the house. There are always about 15-30 cats.

Nice place to sleep! Ihana riippumatto kissalle, yleensä aina joku kissoista makoilee täällä!

Krhm...okay...this was weird. My boss got from her friend some stuff to make a jewel: cover of a bullet, shells, stones, nail of a crab, piece of an pot, glass piece from an glassbottle..
I still don´t know who was more crazy, her friend who ask this, or she that she even made something out of this...but here are the results. On the left the "The bullet" in leather and on the right this "Sea rubbish" in leather aswell and added some wooden beads...

Kröhöm! Pomon ystävä toimitti pomolle läjän "meri-roinaa", jotta pomo tekisi hänelle niistä Samos-korun. Materiaalina toimi luodin hylsy, kotiloita, simpukoita, ruukunpalanen, ravunkynsi, limsapullon lasinpalanen ja isohko kivi. En tiedä vieläkään kumpi on hullumpi, pomoni joka koitti saada näistä aineksista korun läjään, vaiko hänen ystävä, joka korun pyysi. Lopputulos on kuiten tässä, vasemmalla luotikoru ja oikealla meri-roinasta kyhätty koru nahassa, johon lisätty puuhelmiä...

This same friend had a birthday this week, so boss made something more disant to her on the left and on the right is something for herself. Made out of selfmade silverwire..

Samainen ystävä täytti tällä viikolla vuosia, joten pomo päätti tehdä hänelle myös "oikean" korun (kuva vasemmalla), sekä itselleen pomo teki hopealangasta korvakorut.

And some nice vehicles seen again (though I could never imagine that my boss would drive anything pink!)

Muutama mainio kulkuneuvo jälleen bongattu, tosin en voisi kuvitellakaan pomoni ajavan yhdelläkään vaaleanpunaisella kulkuneuvolla!

As you can see, our doggy knows how to relax!

Kissoja saarella on valtavasti.

My boss just realized that we have been in Samos already over four weeks, time is really flying! As you can guess we are still enjoying from our journey. In Samos there are no campings, so we have found many other nice places to sleep. Since we don’t have sun-panels (we definitely must install them in future) after 10 days we needed to get our car batteries loaded. But where to get electricity? Well, our friend here got a brilliant idea; why not drive to the Pythagorion harbor and ask there, since they must give electricity to all small boats too. We drove there and we got permission to park next to a “yellow building” where we could get plugged in. Closer look to this “yellow building” showed that there are toilets, showers (warm water!) and even washing machines, so this turned out to be an excellent place to plug in!

Last few weeks weather has been changing. Some days ago we had only +12, but then again yesterday it was +28. At the moment it’s raining again, about still warm, +24. No complains whatsoever!

We have done some painting work also in the volunteer’s house from the dog shelter. This was nice work and was nice to see a bit closer how the volunteer vets are working here. There was a group of four people from Switzerland and they sterilized 115 cats in five days and still some other operations. Another group from England was here over a week and they took care of the dogs.

Animal Care in Greece is in total different level than what we have got used to. Loads of strays are dying during the winters, since there are no tourists feeding them. Sad but true is that tourists should not feed any of them in summers, since that makes the population of strays bigger, which is again a growing problem and more strays to trying to survive. All tourists of course think that they do a favor and it’s difficult to look these hungry cats and dogs and not feed, but the fact is that it should not be done.

In Samos strays are taken care by Animal Care Samos (www.animalcaresamos.com), and they have done loads of good work here. Every year over 180 dogs gets a new home from abroad through this organization. They are a role model to Greeks how to take care of their animals! It needs a lot of education work and we are hoping that the next generation will make a difference in here.

Where to go next? We don’t know yet, maybe to Crete or back to Italy and France towards Spain, but in the mean while, we still enjoy our stay in Samos!
